Travel Advisory / I-40 Rock Slide / Update 2-2-12

A section of Interstate 40 near the North Carolina/Tennessee border is closed in the westbound lanes near US 276, Exit 20, west of Asheville, North Carolina, near the Tennessee state line in Cocke County, Tennessee. The rock slide happened around 1:00 a.m. on January 31, 2012, near Exit 451. East bound traffic is unaffected by the rock slide. TDOT estimates reopening the interstate by Tuesday, February 7th, weather permitting. Download a printable map. Check the Tennessee Department of Transportation web site www2.tdot.state.tn.us/tsw/smartmap.htm or NC DOT www.ncdot.gov/traffictravel or call 511 for updates.

Western North Carolina attractions such as Asheville, Cherokee, Waynesville, Maggie Valley and North Carolina sections of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are accessible via Interstate 40 west without taking a detour.

Motorists are advised to use caution in the area, stay alert, and are being advised to use the following detours:

Official Detour from Asheville, NC:
Traveling from I-26 West to Asheville, take I-240 West to Exit 4A, onto future I-26 West (Hwy 19/23) . Follow I-26 West, to Johnson City, TN (a North Carolina Scenic Highway) to I-81 South. Take I-81 South and follow back to I-40, Mile Marker 421, in Tennessee. This route is 53 miles longer than I-40.

Alternate Route:
The second route adds roughly 35 minutes to your trip. Traveling from I-26 West to Asheville, take I-240 West to Exit 4A, onto future I-26 West (Hwy 19/23). Exit 19B, onto Hwy 25 North/70 West through Hot Springs to Newport, TN, back onto I-40 at exit 432. Passenger vehicles only are permitted on this road, no commercial travel (i.e., motorcoach, RVs or dual-axel vehicles). Consider possible weather and traffic congestion on this winding two-lane road.
